The markets of the Pays d’Auge
for every day of your stay

Going to the market is a simple way to discover the Pays d’Auge: choosing a cheese, chatting with a producer and bringing home what you need for a meal at the house. From Le Hameau des Prés-Verts, in Les Champeaux, you can visit several market towns on their weekly market day.

Here is a selection to help you plan your week, from the markets near Camembert and Vimoutiers to the market hall in Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives and the stalls of Lisieux. Times may change on public holidays or with the seasons: check the local council’s information before you go.

Which market to choose for the day you have in mind

Camembert and Vimoutiers, to stay close to the gîte

Both are roughly ten minutes away by car. In Vimoutiers you can combine the market with the shops in the town centre. The Friday evening gathering in Camembert gives the market a different feel, at the end of the day, around local producers.

Check the times of Le Petit Marché before you go: the way it is run can vary with the seasons. For fresh produce, plan to head straight back to your house afterwards, or bring a cool bag.

Livarot and Orbec, to combine shopping with a stroll

In Livarot, the Thursday market fits nicely into a day devoted to the cheeses of the Pays d’Auge. In Orbec, Wednesday morning is a chance to wander along the rue Grande and its old façades once your shopping is done.

For these outings, keep your plans light: a market and a stroll are often enough to fill a pleasant morning. The kitchen in your gîte is waiting to turn what you have chosen into a holiday meal.

Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives and Lisieux, for a longer morning

The market hall in Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives gives the Monday market a setting all of its own. In Lisieux, a Saturday can combine the stalls in the centre with a heritage visit. These towns are a longer drive from Les Champeaux; allow time to park and to enjoy the place.

Packing your basket for the market

Bring reusable bags and a way to keep fresh produce cool on the journey. A little cash can be useful, depending on the stallholder. Arriving during the morning leaves you time to look along the stalls before you choose.

What you find at the market follows the seasons and the stallholders who are there that day. Let your meals take shape around what is available: a cheese, some bread, vegetables and a little fruit already make a delicious return to the Hameau.

Cooking local produce in your house

Reinette Grise and the Chalet Normand each have a fully equipped kitchen. You can plan your meals at your own pace, cook together and alternate with an evening at a restaurant. At Reinette Grise, the barbecue and the garden also let you eat outside when the weather allows.

On the days when you would rather start without shopping, the Hameau’s breakfast is available as an option. It is another way to enjoy local flavours during your stay.

Discovering more of the producers

Between two markets, the cheese dairies and producers of the Pays d’Auge offer other chances to discover the local produce. Check their opening days and visiting conditions: a farm or dairy may welcome visitors at different times from a shop.
